What happens when my session times out?

Introduction

CAREFUL automatically logs you out after a period of inactivity to protect patient data. If your session times out, you'll need to re-enter your password to continue working.

Before You Start

No special permissions required. Session timeouts apply to all users regardless of role.

How Session Timeouts Work

CAREFUL monitors your activity while you're logged in. If you don't interact with the application for 8 minutes, your session will automatically time out for security reasons.

Here's what happens:

1. After 7 minutes of inactivity, CAREFUL starts monitoring for timeout
2. After 8 minutes total, you are automatically logged out and redirected to the Session Timeout screen
3. You'll see a message that says: "[Your name], your session has timed out due to inactivity. Please re-enter your password to continue."
4. Your access tokens are cleared from your browser for security
5. If you were using team chat, you'll be automatically disconnected

Steps to Resume After Timeout

When your session times out, follow these steps to get back to work:

1. You'll see the Session Timeout screen with your first name displayed
2. The screen will show which page you were on when the timeout occurred
3. Enter your password in the password field
4. Complete the reCAPTCHA verification (security check)
5. Click the Submit button
6. You'll be automatically returned to the exact page you were viewing before the timeout

If Re-entering Your Password Doesn't Work

Sometimes you may see a timeout screen that "belongs" to a different user. This can happen if:

• You're sharing a computer or device with other CAREFUL users
• A colleague was logged in before you
• Multiple people use the same workstation

What to do:

1. Click the browser's back button or navigate to the login page
2. Enter your own phone number and password
3. Click Sign In to start a fresh session

Tips

• Set yourself "Off Duty" before breaks: If you're stepping away for lunch or end of shift, remember to set yourself off duty and hand over any patients who need ongoing care
• Save your work frequently: While CAREFUL auto-saves most data, it's good practice to complete forms before stepping away
• Shared workstations: Always log out properly (don't just close the browser) if others will use the same device
• Mobile app: The mobile app has the same 8-minute timeout for security
