How to Select a Patient

Introduction

Selecting a patient from a list allows you to view their complete profile, including demographics, clinical notes, actions, and audit history. This is one of the most common tasks in CAREFUL and gives you access to all patient management functions.

Before You Start

No special permissions required. You can select any patient in:

  • My Patients – patients you're responsible for
  • Team Patients – patients in teams you belong to
  • Organisation Patients – all patients in your organisation (if you're an Administrator)
Steps
From My Patients
  1. From the sidebar, click My Patients
  2. The patient list displays with columns showing name, date of birth, status, actions count, and location
  3. Click anywhere on the patient's row in the table
  4. The patient profile opens, showing the Profile tab by default
From a Team View
  1. From the sidebar, click Teams to expand the accordion
  2. Click the name of the team whose patients you want to view
  3. The team view opens with the Patients tab selected by default
  4. Click anywhere on the patient's row in the table
  5. The patient profile opens, showing the Profile tab by default
From My Organisation

  4. The patient profile opens, showing the Profile tab by default
What You'll See After Selecting a Patient

Once you've selected a patient, the patient profile displays with:

  • Header bar showing the patient's name (LASTNAME in capitals), date of birth, and age
  • Status tags including current status (colour-coded), "My Patient" tag (if you're responsible), and location
  • Four tabs: Profile, Actions, Notes, and Log
  • Profile tab (default) showing:
    • Patient demographics (name, gender, date of birth, hospital number, NHS number)
    • Contact details (email, mobile number)
    • Risk flag and location (both editable with pencil icons)
    • Responsible users and teams
    • Current status with duration
    • Organisation-specific custom fields
    • Clinical summary
    • Handover categories by team
Taking Actions on the Selected Patient

From the patient profile, you can:

  • View actions – Click the Actions tab to see all tasks associated with this patient

Finding a Patient Quickly

If you have many patients in the list:

Search by name:

  • Use the search box at the top of any patient list
  • Type the patient's first name or last name
  • Results filter automatically as you type (300ms delay)

Filter by status:

  • Use the filter dropdown next to the search box
  • Select "Active Patients", "No Status", or a specific status
  • The table updates immediately to show only matching patients

Sort the list:

  • Click any column header (Name, Status, Location) to sort
  • Click again to reverse the sort order
Tips
  • The entire row is clickable – you don't need to click a specific button or link. Clicking anywhere on a patient's row opens their profile
  • Patient lists are consistent – whether you're in My Patients, a team view, or the organisation view, patient selection works the same way
  • Use the browser back button – to return to the patient list after viewing a profile, use your browser's back button or click the relevant sidebar link
  • Tab navigation persists – if you switch tabs within a patient profile (e.g., to Actions), the URL updates to remember your position. Refreshing the page returns you to the same tab
  • Look for visual indicators – patients with risk factors show a red flag icon next to their name. The "My Patient" tag appears if you're the responsible clinician
