Introduction
The Patient Access Denied page appears automatically when you attempt to view a patient record you don't have permission to access. This security feature ensures patient information is only visible to authorised team members who are actively involved in that patient's care.
Before You Start
This page cannot be accessed directly through navigation. You will only see this page if you attempt to view a patient record without the proper permissions.
Why you might see this page:
- You are not a member of any teams caring for this patient
- You have been removed from a team that was caring for this patient
- The patient has been discharged from all teams you belong to
- You clicked a patient link from search results or a notification for a patient you cannot access
What You'll See
When redirected to this page, you'll see:
- Page title: "Patient Access Denied" in the top navigation bar
- Blocked icon: A large red blocked symbol in the centre of the screen
- Message: "You do not have permission to view this patient"
The page uses a simple, centred layout to clearly communicate the access restriction.
What to Do Next
To return to the previous page:
- Click the red blocked icon in the centre of the screen
- You will be taken back to the page you were viewing before attempting to access the patient
Alternatively, use your browser's back button or select a different page from the sidebar navigation.
Understanding Patient Access Permissions
Access to patient records in CAREFUL is determined by team membership:
- You can only view patients who are assigned to teams you belong to
- If a patient is discharged from all your teams, you will lose access to their record
- Organisation Administrators have broader access across all patients in the organisation
- Team Owners can see all patients assigned to their team, even if not personally responsible
Tips
- If you believe you should have access: Contact your Team Owner or Organisation Administrator to request that the patient be added to one of your teams, or that you be added to a team caring for this patient
- For discharged patients: If you need to view a patient's historical record after discharge, ask an Administrator for assistance
- Emergency situations: If you need urgent access to a patient record for clinical reasons, contact your Organisation Administrator immediately
- The access check happens at the server level: Even if you have a direct link to a patient record (e.g., from a notification or email), you will be redirected to this page if you lack the necessary permissions when the system attempts to load the patient data
