Introduction
Sorting patient lists helps you quickly find and organise patients by name, location, or status. You can sort patients in any patient list view -- My Patients, team patient lists, or your organisation's patient list.
Before You Start
No special permissions required. All users can sort patient lists in views they have access to.
Steps
Desktop and Tablet
-
Navigate to a patient list by clicking My Patients in the sidebar, or select a team from Teams and click the Patients tab, or click My Organization and select the Patients tab.
-
Look at the column headers in the patient table. Three columns are sortable: Name, Status, and Location.
-
Click on any sortable column header to sort the list. An arrow icon appears next to the column name:
- Arrow up (↑) indicates ascending order (A-Z, or lowest to highest)
- Arrow down (↓) indicates descending order (Z-A, or highest to lowest)
-
Click the same column header again to reverse the sort order. The arrow icon toggles between up and down.
-
Click a different column header to sort by that column instead. Only one column can be sorted at a time.
-
Your sort preference is automatically saved and will persist when you return to that patient list later.
Mobile
-
Navigate to a patient list using the burger menu (☰) at the bottom-left.
-
Tap the sort icon button in the top navigation bar.
-
A dropdown appears with the label "Sort by:". Select the column you want to sort by: Name, Status, or Location.
-
Tap the arrow button to toggle between:
- Arrow up (↑) for ascending order
- Arrow down (↓) for descending order
-
The dropdown closes automatically, and the patient list reloads with your selected sort order.
-
Your sort preference is saved and will be remembered when you return to that view.
Tips
-
Default sort order: My Patients and Organisation Patients default to sorting by last name in ascending order (A-Z). Team patient lists default to last name in descending order (Z-A).
-
Sorting resets pagination: When you change the sort order, the table automatically returns to page 1.
-
Each view remembers its own sort: If you sort patients in the Emergency Department team differently from your My Patients view, each list maintains its own preference.
-
Only one column at a time: You cannot sort by multiple columns simultaneously. Clicking a new column header replaces the previous sort.
