Introduction
CAREFUL is a responsive web application that adapts to work on desktop computers, tablets, and mobile phones. You can also download native mobile apps for iOS and Android for a faster, offline-capable experience.
Before You Start
No special permissions required. CAREFUL works on any device with a modern web browser. For the best mobile experience, consider downloading the native app from your device's app store.
Understanding Device Differences
Desktop and Tablet
Desktop and tablet devices offer the full CAREFUL experience with identical functionality. The main difference is visual:
- Desktop (screens wider than 1024px): The main navigation menu appears as a fixed sidebar on the left side of the screen. You can collapse or expand it using the toggle button.
- Tablet (screens 768px to 1024px): The navigation sidebar is hidden by default. Tap the hamburger menu icon (☰) at the bottom-left to open it.
All features work the same way on both desktop and tablet.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones (screens narrower than 768px) display CAREFUL with an optimised layout:
Navigation:
- The main sidebar is hidden by default
- Tap the hamburger menu icon (☰) at the bottom-left to access navigation
- A bottom navigation bar provides quick access to key sections
Context Menus:
- The three-dot kebab menus (⋮) open as full-screen overlays instead of dropdown menus
- Tap outside the menu or use the close button to dismiss it
Limited Features:
- Print functions are not available on mobile devices
- Some dialogs and forms are optimised for smaller screens with adjusted layouts
All core clinical functions — managing patients, creating actions, sending handovers, referring patients — work identically on mobile.
Using CAREFUL on the Web
Desktop Browser
- Navigate to your CAREFUL instance URL (e.g.,
careful.onlineor your organisation's custom domain) - The navigation sidebar appears on the left side of the screen
- Click any sidebar item to navigate: My Organization, My Patients, Teams, My Actions, Handovers
- Use the sidebar toggle button to collapse the menu for more screen space
Tablet Browser
- Navigate to your CAREFUL instance URL
- Tap the hamburger menu icon (☰) at the bottom-left to open the navigation drawer
- Select a navigation item
- The drawer closes automatically after you make a selection
- Use the bottom navigation bar for quick access to frequently used sections
Mobile Phone Browser
- Navigate to your CAREFUL instance URL
- The interface adapts to fit your screen with a bottom navigation bar
- Tap the hamburger icon (☰) to open the main menu
- Context menus (⋮) appear as full-screen overlays — tap outside to close them
- Dialogs and forms are optimised for touch input
Mobile browser limitations:
- Session timeout applies (you'll be logged out after 15 minutes of inactivity)
- You must stay online to use the application
- Browser tabs may reload if your phone runs low on memory
Using the Native Mobile Apps
CAREFUL offers native apps for iOS and Android with enhanced features:
- Stay logged in: No automatic session timeout (you remain logged in until you explicitly log out)
- Faster loading: Native apps load more quickly than web browsers
- Offline capability: Recently accessed patient data remains available when you temporarily lose connection
- Push notifications (if enabled by your organisation): Receive alerts for handovers, referrals, and urgent actions
Installing on iOS
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad
- Search for "Careful Online"
- Tap Get to download and install the app
- Open the app and log in with your CAREFUL credentials
Installing on Android
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device
- Search for "Careful Online"
- Tap Install to download the app
- Open the app and log in with your CAREFUL credentials
Tips
- Desktop users: Use keyboard shortcuts for faster navigation. Press
?to view available shortcuts. - Tablet users: Rotate your device to landscape orientation for a more spacious layout on forms and tables.
- Mobile users: Enable push notifications in the native app to receive alerts even when CAREFUL isn't open.
- All users: Your session persists across devices — you can start work on desktop and continue on mobile.
