Using Tabs in CAREFUL Views

Introduction

Many views in CAREFUL use tabs to organise related information into separate sections. Tabs let you quickly switch between different aspects of a patient, team, or organisation without leaving the current screen. For example, a patient's profile, actions, notes, and activity log are all accessible via tabs on the Patient View.

Before You Start

No special permissions are required to view tabs, though some tabs may only be visible to users with specific roles. For instance, the Actions tab in My Organization is only visible to Administrators.

Which Views Have Tabs?

CAREFUL uses tabs in the following views:

Team View

Access via Teams in the sidebar, then select a team.

Tabs available:

  1. Patients - All patients currently under this team's care
  2. Chat - Team messaging (only visible if chat is enabled for both the team and organisation)
  3. Actions - Tasks assigned to team members
  4. Members - Team membership and user management
  5. Referrals - Incoming referral requests from other teams
  6. Log - Audit trail of team activities

  1. Dashboard - Quick overview of your current workload
  2. Profile - Your account details and settings
  3. Activity - Your recent actions and changes

Tabs available (viewing another user):

  1. Profile - Their account details
  2. Activity - Their recent actions and changes
How to Use Tabs
Switching Between Tabs

On desktop: Click the tab name at the top of the view. The selected tab appears with a white background and darker text.

On mobile: Tap the tab name. On smaller screens, tabs become scrollable if there are many - swipe horizontally to see all available tabs.

Understanding Tab Badges

Many tabs display coloured badges with numbers to highlight items needing attention:

  • Red badge - Overdue actions requiring completion
  • Blue badge - Patient count
  • Orange badge - Unread @ mentions in team chat
  • Chat badge - Unread chat messages
  • Handover badges - Pending handover requests (received or sent)
  • Referral badge - Pending referral requests

These badges help you prioritise your work at a glance.

Tab State Persistence

When you switch tabs, CAREFUL updates the URL in your browser (e.g., /teams/123?tabindex=1). This means:

  • You can bookmark specific tabs and return directly to them
  • The browser's back and forward buttons work as expected
  • Refreshing the page keeps you on the same tab
  • Sharing a URL with a colleague takes them to the same tab you're viewing
Tips
  • Keyboard navigation: Tabs currently require mouse clicks or taps - keyboard shortcuts for tab switching are not available.
  • Conditional tabs: Some tabs only appear when certain features are enabled. For example, the Chat tab in Team View only appears if chat is enabled for both the team and your organisation.
  • Quick workflows: Use tabs to complete related tasks without navigating away. For instance, when viewing a patient, you can add a note on the Notes tab, create an action on the Actions tab, and check the audit trail on the Log tab - all without returning to the main menu.
  • Badge counts update automatically: When actions are completed or handovers are accepted, the badge counts refresh to reflect the current state.
