Introduction
When a colleague hands over responsibility for their patients to you, you'll receive a handover request. Accepting a handover transfers patient responsibility and reassigns any associated actions to you. This is commonly used during shift changes or when a colleague goes off duty.
Before You Start
No special permissions required. Any organisational user (Administrator, Team Owner, or Clinical User) can accept handover requests sent to them.
Note: You can only receive handover requests when you are set to "on duty" status.
Steps
-
From the sidebar, click Handovers. A badge on this link shows how many pending handover requests you have.
-
The Handovers page opens. You'll see two tabs: Received and Sent. The Received tab displays handover requests sent to you.
-
Review the handover request. The table shows:
- The patient(s) being handed over
- The name of the colleague handing over (in the From user column)
- Accept and Reject buttons
-
Click the green Accept button next to the handover you want to accept.
-
The button text changes to Click to confirm. You have 3 seconds to confirm your choice.
-
Click the button again within 3 seconds to confirm.
-
The handover is accepted immediately:
- The handover disappears from your Received tab
- Patient responsibility is transferred to you
- Any actions associated with those patients are reassigned to you
- The sidebar badge count updates automatically
- Your colleague receives a notification that you've accepted their handover request (if they're on duty)
If you change your mind, wait 3 seconds without clicking again and the button will reset to Accept.
Tips
-
Two-click confirmation prevents accidents – The confirmation step ensures you don't accidentally accept a handover with a single misclick.
-
No success message appears – When acceptance is successful, the handover simply disappears from the list. This indicates the transfer completed successfully.
-
Both buttons are disabled during processing – While the system processes your acceptance, both the Accept and Reject buttons are temporarily disabled to prevent duplicate submissions.
-
Check the Sent tab – If you've sent handover requests to colleagues, you can monitor them in the Sent tab. You'll see when they're accepted or rejected.
-
Alternative: Reject a handover – If you can't accept responsibility for the patients, click the red Reject button instead. You'll see a confirmation message "Click again to reject" and must click again within 3 seconds to confirm.
