How to Revoke Team Owner Access

Introduction

Revoking Team Owner access demotes a team owner back to a standard team member role. This is useful when reorganizing team leadership or when an owner's responsibilities change. Only organization administrators can demote team owners.

Before You Start

  • You must be an Organization Administrator to demote team owners
  • Team owners can promote or demote standard team members, but cannot demote other team owners
  • The team member you're demoting will remain on the team but lose owner privileges (ability to manage team settings, add/remove members, and promote others)

Steps

  1. From the left-hand sidebar, click on the team name where you want to revoke owner access

  2. The team view opens with several tabs at the top. Click on the Members tab

  3. The members table displays all team members with their details (name, job title, contact information, duty status, and role)

  4. Locate the team member whose owner status you wish to revoke by scrolling through the list

  5. On the right side of that member's row, click the three-dot menu button (context menu) to open the actions dropdown

  6. From the dropdown menu, select Demote to Team Member (shown with a down-right arrow icon)

  7. A confirmation dialog appears with the title Confirm Demotion to Team Member and asks: "Are you sure you want to Demote [First Name] [Last Name] to a Team Member?"

  8. Click Yes to confirm the demotion

  9. The dialog closes and the member table refreshes automatically. The user's role badge updates to reflect their new Team Member status, and they no longer have owner privileges

Tips

  • Audit trail: All role changes are automatically logged in the team's audit log (accessible from the Log tab). You can review who made changes and when
  • Immediate effect: The demotion takes effect immediately. The demoted user will lose access to owner-only features like team settings and member management
  • Reversible: You can promote the user back to Team Owner at any time using the same process (select Promote to Team Owner from their context menu)
  • Multiple owners: Teams can have multiple owners. Demoting one owner doesn't affect other team owners
  • Cannot self-demote: Team owners cannot demote themselves unless they are also organization administrators
  • How to Promote a Team Member to Team Owner: Give standard team members owner privileges
  • How to Remove a Team Member: Completely remove someone from a team (different from demotion)
  • How to Manage Team Settings: Learn about other team owner capabilities
