Introduction
If you've sent a referral to another team but no longer need them to accept the patient, you can cancel it. Cancelling a referral removes it from the receiving team's queue and from your sent referrals list. This is useful when circumstances change, such as the patient being discharged or the referral being sent in error.
Before You Start
- You must be a member of the team that sent the referral (the source team)
- Only sent referrals can be cancelled - you cannot cancel referrals your team has received
- The referral must still be outstanding (not already accepted or rejected)
Steps
-
From the sidebar, select My Teams and click on the team that sent the referral
-
Click the Referrals tab at the top of the team view
-
Scroll to the Referrals sent section (the bottom half of the page with an upward arrow icon)
-
Locate the referral you want to cancel in the table - you'll see the patient name and target team listed
-
Click the red Cancel button (with an X icon) in the actions column for that referral
-
The button will show a loading spinner briefly while the cancellation processes
-
Once complete, the referral will immediately disappear from the table
Tips
- No undo option: Cancelling a referral is immediate and cannot be undone. If you cancel by mistake, you'll need to create a new referral
- No confirmation dialog: The system does not ask you to confirm before cancelling, so make sure you're clicking the correct referral
- Automatic updates: The receiving team will no longer see the referral in their "Referrals received" section once you cancel it
- Audit trail: All cancelled referrals are recorded in the team log for compliance and tracking purposes
- Empty state: If you cancel your last outstanding referral, you'll see the message "This team has no outstanding sent referrals"
