How to Manage Chat Notifications

Introduction

Chat notifications alert you to new messages in team chat rooms. Currently, CAREFUL does not provide user-level notification settings. Notifications are managed automatically at the team and organisation level by administrators.

Before You Start
  • Your organisation must have chat enabled
  • Your team must have chat enabled
  • Note: Individual users cannot currently configure their own notification preferences
Current Notification Behaviour

Chat notifications in CAREFUL work as follows:

Desktop and Web Users

When using CAREFUL in a web browser on desktop:

  • Chat notifications are currently not displayed in the browser interface
  • You will see new messages when you open the Chat tab within your team
  • There are no browser push notifications or notification badges at this time
Mobile App Users (iOS and Android)

When using the CAREFUL mobile app:

  1. At first login, the app requests permission to send notifications
  2. If you allowed notifications, you'll receive push notifications for chat messages even when the app is closed
  3. If you denied permission, you can enable it later through your device settings

To manage mobile push notifications:

  1. Open your device's Settings app (not CAREFUL)
  2. Find and select CAREFUL from your list of apps
  3. Select Notifications
  4. Toggle notifications on or off, or adjust notification style, sounds, and badges

Note: This controls all CAREFUL notifications (chat messages and system alerts), not just chat.

Team-Level Chat Settings (Administrators and Team Owners Only)

Administrators and team owners can enable or disable chat for an entire team:

  1. From the sidebar, select Teams and choose your team
  2. Click the kebab menu (⋮) in the top-right corner
  3. Select Update Team Chat Settings
  4. Toggle Enable Team Chat to Yes or No
  5. Click Save

Important: When you change this setting, you will be logged out and asked to re-authenticate.

When chat is disabled for a team, the Chat tab will not appear and members will not receive chat notifications from that team.

What You Can Do Now

While waiting for user-level notification preferences, you can:

  • Check the Chat tab regularly for new messages in your teams
  • Use mobile notifications if you're on the CAREFUL app (manage via device settings)
  • Contact your administrator if you need chat enabled or disabled for your team
  • Set yourself to "Off Duty" when you don't want to be contacted (though this affects handovers, not just chat)
Tips
  • Desktop users cannot currently receive browser notifications -- you must open the Chat tab to check for new messages
  • Mobile notifications are all-or-nothing -- you cannot currently control chat notifications separately from other CAREFUL notifications
  • If you're an administrator or team owner, disabling team chat will remove the Chat tab for all team members
