How to Add a New Action

Introduction

Actions are tasks assigned to team members that need to be completed for a patient's care. Use actions to track clinical tasks, follow-ups, investigations, or any work that needs doing. CAREFUL provides two ways to create actions: a full dialog with all options, or a quick inline method for faster workflow.

Before You Start

  • You must be viewing a patient's profile or patient actions list
  • No special permissions required - all clinical users can create actions
  • Actions can be assigned to yourself or any team member

Steps

Method 1: Full Action Creation (with all options)

  1. Navigate to the patient's profile (via My Patients, My Team, or My Organisation)
  2. Click the kebab menu (⋮) in the top right corner
  3. Select Create Action from the menu
  4. A dialog titled "Create Action for [Patient Name]" appears
  5. Fill in the action details:
    • Title (required): Enter a brief description of what needs to be done
    • Assignee (required): Search for a team member by name, or toggle Assign to Me to assign it to yourself (defaults to you)
    • Due Date (optional): Select when the action should be completed
    • Due Time (optional): Set a specific time if needed (only available when a due date is set)
    • Attachments (optional): Upload any relevant files or images
    • Detailed Description (optional): Add additional notes or instructions
    • Create another after submit (optional): Check this box if you need to create multiple actions in sequence
  6. Click Submit (the button will change to "Click to confirm" while processing)
  7. The action is created and appears in the patient's action list
  8. If you checked "Create another after submit," the form clears and stays open; otherwise, the dialog closes automatically

Method 2: Quick Inline Creation (faster workflow)

  1. Navigate to the patient's Actions tab
  2. At the top of the actions list, you'll see a text input with placeholder "Create a New Action for [Patient Name]"
  3. Type the action name directly into this field
  4. Press Enter or click the Create button (press Escape to cancel)
  5. The action is instantly created and assigned to you, appearing in the list below

Tips

  • Quick method is fastest: Use the inline creation when you only need a simple action with just a name - it automatically assigns to you
  • Use the full dialog for complex actions: When you need to set due dates, assign to others, or add attachments, use the full creation dialog
  • Batch creation: Check "Create another after submit" in the full dialog when you need to create multiple actions for the same patient
  • Keyboard shortcuts: In inline creation, Enter submits and Escape cancels
  • Due time requires due date: You cannot set a time without also setting a date
  • Search for assignees: In the full dialog, start typing a team member's name to find them quickly
