Introduction

Modern slavery is hidden. It does not look like the slavery of the history books. It exists in cleaning contracts, agricultural work and car washes. It supports cheap garments from overcrowded factories, it oppresses construction crews and helps assemble high-value electronics. It comes as part of your chocolate bar.

Modern slavery is the person who cannot leave their job. It is the passport held by an employer. It is the exhausting hours with no days off, for 'pay' that disappears in deductions for basic necessities. It is penury. It is servitude.

Modern slavery happens in the UK. It happens in Europe. It happens in America. Everywhere men and women are in invisible chains.

Modern slavery permeates the supply chains of every company somewhere. Almost always without those companies knowing. Almost always because those companies do not care to look.

The defeat of modern slavery requires awareness and persistence. Removing it is only possible when we acknowledge it exists and that it is closer than we care to admit.

Persistence means asking questions; taking it seriously.

Careful Systems Limited ("CAREFUL", "the Company", "we") is a small UK software company. Most of what we buy is cloud services and professional services, and the direct risk of modern slavery in our supply chain may be low — but it is not zero.

This statement sets out the simple commitments we make, and the awareness we expect of ourselves and the people we work with.

A voluntary statement

CAREFUL is below the turnover threshold in section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and is not required to publish a slavery and human trafficking statement. We publish this one voluntarily.

What we ask of suppliers

Our contracts with new suppliers and partners prohibit the use of forced, compulsory or trafficked labour, and the holding of any person — adult or child — in slavery or servitude. We ask suppliers to apply the same rule to their own suppliers.

Whatever the relationship — whatever the kind of goods or services, whichever sector, whichever countries are involved — we think it is right to ask questions, to discuss the risks of modern slavery, and to seek out and avoid supporting it by error or omission.

What we ask of everyone at CAREFUL

Be aware. Modern slavery is real, it is hidden, and it is closer than we think. If you think we can prevent or address the prevalence of modern slavery, email or talk to the CEO.
